A political scientist and coeditor of a new book about the degradation of civil discourse in American politics will be the next director of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement at Colby College, President William D. Adams announced March 7. Daniel M. Shea of Meadville, Penn., will come from Allegheny College, where he served as professor of political science and director of the Center for Political Participation. Shea, who will also teach in the government department at Colby, was selected following a national search. He will start at Colby August 1.

The author or editor of 19 books and scores of articles on the American political process, Shea focuses on campaigns and elections, civility in politics, the dynamics of the party system, the politics of the media, and grassroots political activism. In 2012 he coedited, with Morris P. Fiorina, a book titled Can We Talk? The Rise of Rude, Nasty, Stubborn Politics, which addresses an important shift in the tone of political discourse?a shift cited as the reason Maine Senator Olympia Snowe recently announced she would not seek reelection. Another book by Shea published in 2012 is Let?s Vote! The Essentials of the American Electoral Process.

In 2002 Shea initiated the creation of the Center for Political Participation at Allegheny, which offers student-centered programs such as fellowships and internships, community outreach projects, and scholarly activities including conferences and lectures. A number of the center?s initiatives, particularly those centered on the decline in civility in politics, have garnered national media attention. Its April 2010 report, ?Nastiness, Name-calling and Negativity: The Decline of Civility in American Politics,? was covered in more than 400 media outlets throughout the United States and abroad.

As director of the Goldfarb Center, Shea will oversee programs and programming, build closer ties between Colby?s curriculum and community outreach activities, and develop and implement a vision for the center as a hub for campus intellectual life.

?Dan?s collaborative nature, his affinity and energy for big ideas, and his desire to connect with faculty and students across campus all fit well with the next phase of the Goldfarb Center at Colby,? said Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Lori Kletzer. ?His solid public affairs and civic engagement experience will build on the center?s current strengths. I am looking forward to working with him.?

Shea received a bachelor of arts from the State University of New York at Oswego and a master of arts from the University of West Florida. In 1993 he earned a doctorate in political science from the State University of New York at Albany. He has served on the faculty at the University of Akron, Lafayette College, and, since 1999, Allegheny College.

The Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, founded in 2003, brings faculty and students together with local, state, national and international leaders to explore creative, interdisciplinary approaches to the complex challenges facing today?s world. The center facilitates a collaborative array of public lectures, seminars, workshops, service learning activities, panels, debates, and scholarly research across the liberal arts, helping Colby students make connections between their work in the classroom and contemporary political, economic, social and environmental issues.

?I?m so excited to be joining one of the nation?s finest, most prestigious liberal arts institutions, and to be teaming up with such a thoughtful, committed group of faculty, staff, and administrators. And of course I?m giddy about working with Colby students. I have no doubt that we can do wonderful things for the campus and the broader community. I can?t wait to get started.?

Shea will be joined in Waterville by his wife, Christine Gatto-Shea, and their three children.

What happened to civility in America? Did it disappear? Did it ever truly exist? On February 17th, 2012, a group of leading scholars and journalists -- including Ellen Goodman (recipient of Colby's Elijah Parish Lovejoy award), Joe Klein, Randall Kennedy and Jill Lepore -- will gather at the University of Massachusetts-Boston for a forum on Civility and American Democracy to discuss those questions and more about the role civility plays in American politics. The event will be moderated by Tom Ashbrook, award-winning journalist and host of NPR?s On Point. The Goldfarb Center is pleased to host a live webcast of the day-long event.

FORUM SCHEDULE

Welcome (8:30 a.m.)

- Steve Crosby, dean of the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at UMass-Boston

- David Tebaldi, executive director, Mass Humanities

- James A Leach, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities

Session 1: Civility in American History (9:00 - 10:30 a.m.)

Is civility really as American as apple pie? What about American individualism and self expression, the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement? Does the practice of civility evolve differently in differing cultural experiences? Can civility accommodate political change and facilitate social progress? This panel raises fundamental questions about civility and American democracy.

- David L. Smith, John W. Chandler Professor of English at Williams College

- Ilan Stavans, Lewis-Sebring Professor of Latin American and Latino Culture and Five College 40th Anniversary Professor

- John Stauffer, chair of the History of American Civilization program and professor of English and African and African American Studies at Harvard University

Session 2: Civility and Morality (10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.)

Is civility a smokescreen for the status quo? Does it encourage conformity and inhibit dissent? Civility demands that we respect all religions, but at what price? Can a new civility lead to a better informed citizenry? This panel explores the relationship between civility, morality and the American tradition of religious tolerance.

- Diana Eck, professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies at Harvard University and chair of the Religion department

- Mark Lilla, essayist and historian of ideas at Columbia University

- Alan Wolfe, professor of Political Science and director of the Boisi Center for Religion and Public Life at Boston College

BREAK

Session 3: Civility and the Pursuit of Truth (1:30-3:00 p.m.)

Is civility a distraction that marginalizes the individual and inhibits an honest examination of absolutes? Does it undermine our need to sometimes speak truth to power? What happens to civil discourse when ordinary political conversation becomes shrouded in the sacred? Can civil discourse lead zealots to reconciliation and mutual respect? This panel examines fundamental questions about the value of civility in a democratic society.

- Randall Kennedy, Michael R. Klein Professor of Law at Harvard Law School

- Jill Lepore, David Woods Kemper ?41 Professor of American History and chair of the History and Literature program at Harvard University

- Austin Sarat, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science, Amherst College

Session 4: Civility and the Media (3:15 - 4:15 p.m.)

Part of the problem or part of the solution? In the competitive, ratings-driven world of media, where is the market for civility? This panel of distinguished journalists reflects on the day?s discussions and what can be applied from them to improve journalistic best practices.

- Ellen Goodman, Pulitzer prize winning columnist, author, and recipient of Colby's Elijah Parish Lovejoy award for courage in journalism.

- Joe Klein, journalist, author and weekly columnist for Time?s ?In the Arena,? covering national and international affairs.

We are pleased to announce the latest offering of the Friends of the Goldfarb Center Seminar Series. Retired Colby Research Scientist/adjunct professor and avid birder Bets Brown will provide an introduction to birds and bird-watching during this six-week seminar. With the coming of spring, this timely course will coincide with the arrival of many migrants. During class sessions you will discuss bird identification and classification, tools of the trade for observing birds, and helpful guides for bird identification. Because bird songs and calls are helpful for identifications in the field, one session will be devoted to listening to birds. In addition to identification of birds, aspects of bird behavior, foraging, and reproduction will also be covered.

Classes will take place on Wednesdays from 4 pm to 5 pm, beginning on April 13 and ending on May 18. One of the class days will involve a field trip in the Colby Arboretum. The class will meet in the Diamond Building Room 241. Space in this seminar is limited. To reserve a space, please respond via e-mail to aelliott@colby.edu or call 859-5313.

This January, as a Goldfarb Center L. Sandy Maisel Fellow, I traveled halfway around the world to join the Ama Ghar family. I spent my time at the home getting to know the forty different children, playing card games, hide and seek, and music, while tutoring in math and English during the afternoons and evenings. As I got to know them, I learned about the various backgrounds that led them to call Ama Ghar their home. I heard stories of extremely difficult childhoods: some kids were orphaned, some were abandoned, and some had families so impoverished that they never had enough food, let alone a quality education. My days were fun filled and humbling. I had the chance to spend time with the warmest, kindest and funniest kids I?ve ever known, and to see the immense challenges that Nepal faces through the eyes of children that bear a great deal of its burden. These difficulties didn?t lead to a home full of sadness, however. Instead, I was witness to a living example of just how healing and supportive a family can be. The Ama Ghar children have transcended deeply rooted social boundaries and built a large, loving, and truly supportive family. My experience with them was challenging and a true inspiration, and has left me with stories and wonderful experiences that could fill up a book. For now though, I will say that it has quite powerfully changed my life. So to the Goldfarb Center and the students of Professor Sandy Maisel who made my incredible experience possible, thank you!
Mischa Noll,'11 - Recipient of 2010-11 Maisel Fund Internship Grant

This January I traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark for three weeks on a generous grant for student research from the Goldfarb Center. My research was titled Sustainable Solutions to Climate Change through Public Action: An Ethnographic Case Study of Bicycle Use in Copenhagen, Denmark. In conjunction with a year-long senior research project comparing the efficacy of climate policy between Denmark and the United States, the trip allowed me to actively engage with my two majors ? Anthropology and Science, Technology, and Society ? through independent fieldwork abroad. While in Copenhagen, I explored the infrastructure and culture that facilitate bicycling. I worked with professors and PhD students at the University of Copenhagen, conducted interviews with individuals at the City Bike Program and the Metro, and experienced urban bicycling first hand. Through these interactions and my stay with a host family, I learned that Copenhagen bicycling culture exists because top-down government policies make it economically disadvantageous to travel by most alternative means of transportation. It is therefore not local or social agency alone that encourages sustainability, but the combination of pervasive social attitudes with effective national policy. Needless to say, my experiences in Copenhagen were both rewarding and extremely challenging. Though my research abroad lasted less than a month, the lessons learned truly strengthened my passion for a career in environmental anthropology and climate change policy, and I am very excited to pursue graduate study in this field after Colby.

Danielle Sheppard, '11 - Recipient of 2010-11 Maisel Fund Student Research Grant

The Deficit: Causes and Consequences - JanPlan Lecture Series Concludes

After great success and interest last year, the Goldfarb Center hosted its second January Lecture Series throughout the JanPlan term. This year?s theme: The Deficit: Causes and Consequences. Each Wednesday of the month, we invited a Colby professor or local leader to share a perspective on the theme with Colby students, staff, and faculty. Our own Sandy Maisel began the series with an introduction to debt and deficits and a peek at the proposed solutions floating around national and state legislatures. Professor of Government and International Studies Jennifer Yoder followed with a lecture on bailouts and budget crises in the European Union. The third Wednesday, Professor of Economics David Findlay took time out of his marathon Principles of Macroeconomics JanPlan course to give us a lesson in fiscal policy and debt. To round out the series, we invited Garrett Martin of the Maine Center for Economic Policy, Dean Lachance of Bread of Life Ministries in Augusta, and Betty Palmer of the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter to provide their impassioned commentary on the deficit?s impact on nonprofits, social programs, and homelessness in Maine. Despite snowstorms, scheduling conflicts, and the ?I?d rather be skiing? JanPlan mindset, each lecture saw a supportive, interested, and enthusiastic audience. As a well-attended, comprehensive, and informative lecture series, our hope is that it has become a new JanPlan tradition.

Brian Solar '08 and his sister Stefanie '10, created the Maine Philanthropy Award in 2008 to raise awareness about and to recognize the value of philanthropy in Maine. Working with the College and the Goldfarb Center, Brian and Stefanie created an ongoing program to recognize individuals who make contributions that improve all of our lives, giving of themselves humbly and without expectation of reward. 2010 winners were recognized at an award ceremony and dinner at Colby College on April 7.

The award recognizes four philanthropists -- someone whose work has benefited the entire state, someone who has made an outstanding contribution to our Central Maine community, a high school student whose work for others deserves recognition, and a Colby student who has contributed in these ways. This year Colby student Stephen Erario '10, high school student Ameena Khan, Waterville community member Tobi Scheider, and Lyndel "Joe" & Carol Wishcamper were honored.

Each semester the Goldfarb Center announces a call for applications for the Student Advisory Board. This board consists of students from all classes and a diverse array of majors. The board meets to discuss programming ideas, helps to organize events, and promotes GC activities on campus. The board applicants are reviewed and selected by GC staff and the GC student chairs. This semester the GC has appointed five new members of the Advisory Board: Laura Maloney '12, Christine Reynolds '12, Keith Barnish '13, Berol Dewdney '13, Siya Hegde '13, and Keith Love '13. The student chairs for the academic year 2010-11 will be: Ellen Morris and Smriti Bajracharya for the class of 2011, Justin Rouse for the class of 2012, and Lisa Kaplan for the class of 2013.

For more information and to see a complete listing of our student boards, click here.

Under the leadership of the Colby Volunteer Center, eleven Colby students are representing the College in New York City as they engage in a week's worth of civic engagement activities during Spring Break 2010. More than just an isolated trip, however, the Colby ASB program also included a seminar series presented by Dr. Adam Howard of the Education Department. Participants engaged the issue of urban poverty in the United States from multiple perspectives, so they will be better able to contextualize their immersion experience throughout the week. Read a blog that the students are writing during their trip.
The Goldfarb Center led an incredibly successful community-wide campaign to raise much-needed funds for the Stand With Haiti Campaign of Partners in Health. The entire effort culminated with a benefit dinner and silent auction on Friday, February 26th. While donations and payments for auction items are still coming in, we've already raised over $70,000, including the generous match from the two anonymous Colby alumni. The Center has been humbled by the generosity and compassion of the Colby community. Thank you to everyone who contributed and volunteered! Read more about this effort.
