Colby Plans Celebrations for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Several groups at Colby College have planned community activities, including musical performances and a candlelight celebration, to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 17. All activities are free of charge and everyone is welcome.
At noon in the Page Commons Room of Colbys Cotter Union, Eddie Glaude will give the keynote address of the day, "Martin Luther King, Jr.s Dream: Our Illusion." Glaude is a professor of religion and Africana studies at Bowdoin College. There will also be musical performances.
At 6:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel there will be a community candlelight celebration. The celebration will include musical performances and readings by members of the Colby College community and the Muskie Center as well as the Waterville Senior High and Junior High Schools civil rights project teams. Reverend Margaret Lawson, pastor of the Green Memorial Church in Portland, will be guest soloist.
The activities are co-sponsored by Colbys Dean of Students Office, the Student Government Associations cultural chair, the Circle of Hip Hop and the cultural events committee. For more information, please contact Jeri Roseboro at 872-3104.
