Sculptor to Talk at Colby on February 16

Sculptor Richard Fleischner will present a slide show lecture of his works on Wednesday, February 16, at 5 p.m. in room 154 of the Bixler Art and Music Center at Colby College. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Fleischner is internationally recognized for his sculptures and has completed more than 30 installations since 1971. His most recent work, in County Kilfane, Ireland, consists of granite and bronze elements within a wooded site. At Harvard University he produced a copper and gilded sculpture on the facade of the Office for the Arts. At MIT Fleischner created a two and a half-acre sculpture court, which includes granite inlays, granite stairs, plantings, furniture and lighting. Other works are on view at Brown University, the Dallas Museum of Art and the University of North Carolina.

Fleischner has received many awards, including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. His most recent exhibit, "Mazes & Squares," was held at Danese Gallery in New York. A New York Times review said: "Richard Fleischner produces the kind of user-friendly public art that mixes (or blurs the boundaries between) sculpture, architecture and landscaping."

The lecture, sponsored by the Colby College Art Department, is part of a continuing series of presentations for creative artists supported by the Arts Lecture Fund.
