Annual Writers Harvest Dance and Reading at Colby
On Friday, March 10, the local band Strangebrew will perform a benefit dance concert at 9 p.m. in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union at Colby College in Waterville. The dance will be preceded by an 8:30 p.m. reading by James Boylan, associate professor of English at Colby. Boylan will read from his recently published novel, Getting In, as well as from some newer short works. Getting In was optioned for film by New Line Cinema and recently was chosen as an alternate selection by the Book of the Month Club. A $3 donation is requested at the door and everyone is welcome. Strangebrew, which features Boylan on keyboards and Laura Hudson on lead vocals, plays an eclectic mix of rock and roll, funk, Motown and "just plain noise." The money donated at the dance and reading will benefit the national hunger relief organization Share Our Strength. The event is part of the annual Writers Harvest, a nationwide event held at more than 100 colleges and universities to raise money for the homeless and the hungry. All money raised at Colby will go directly to use in Central Maine. The annual Colby Writers Harvest event was founded in 1992 by former professor of English, Richard Russo. It is sponsored by President William Cotter, the Student Association, the Program in Creative Writing and Share Our Strength.
