Colby College Hosts Spring Woodsmens Meet
Colby College in Waterville, Maine, will host a spring woodsmens mud meet on Saturday, March 11. Mens, womens and "Jack & Jill" mixed teams from New England and New York will compete in ax-throwing, pole-climbing, buck-sawing, pulp-throwing and fire-building contests, to name just some of the events.
Rule one from the official rules for the mud meet states: "Have a good time." Teams consist of six woodsmen, each competing in one singles event, one doubles event and all team events. Participating teams include the University of New Hampshire, the University of Maine-Orono, Unity College and Finger Lakes Community College of Canandaigua, N.Y. Colby faculty and staff members will act as judges in each of the 13 events.
The mud meet will begin with a captains meeting at 8 a.m. Events will begin at 9 a.m. The team events include crosscut saw, bow saw, pulp pit and the packboard/fire-building relay. Singles events include the ax throw, pole climb, disk stack, singles bucksaw and chain throw. Doubles events are the vertical chop, horizontal chop and quarter split. All events have roots in skills and activities that are part of traditional logging operations.
