Colbys Collegium Musicum Concert is April 22
Collegium Musicum, a Colby College performing group specializing in early vocal and instrumental music, will present a concert titled "Vanitas Vanitatum or Evanescence of Earthly Joy," under the direction of Professor Eva Linfield at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The performance, part of the Music at Colby concert series, will be held in Colbys Lorimer Chapel and is open to the public free of charge.
The central work to be performed will be Heinrich Schützs Musikalische Exequien, a German requiem mass from 1636. Schütz s piece is considered the most artful 17th-century composition of its genre. The requiem mass, much like vanitas paintings, represents the temporal nature of earthly matters and joys as well as the different stages from life to death.
