The Liberty Balalaika Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union at Colby College in Waterville. Based in Liberty, the ensemble is a community orchestra of a dozen or more members directed by Unity College Professor Chris Marshall.
Playing authentic Russian instruments - the balalaika and the domra - the Ensemble performs an array of folk and traditional music of Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Guitars, fiddles, accordions, clarinets and vocals round out the ensemble. Throughout the concert Marshall will talk about the history of the instruments and the music being presented. The concert will conclude with the audience participating in dancing.
