African Americans in the West is Colby Lecture Topic

Quintard Taylor, a professor of history at the University of Oregon, will visit Colby College in Waterville on Monday, Oct. 26, to talk about "African Americans in the American West, 1528-1990." The 7 p.m. lecture in Lovejoy 100 is free of charge and is open to the public. For information, contact Jeri Roseboro at 872-3104.

Taylor is the author of In Search of the Racial Frontier: African Americans in the American West, 1528-1990 (1998), and is the first writer in two decades to examine African-American history in the Western United States. Taylor's articles have appeared in the Western Historical Quarterly, the Pacific Historical Review, Oregon Historical Quarterly, and the Journal of Negro History, among other journals.

The Knight Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences and head of the Department of History at the University of Oregon, Taylor holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and previously taught at Washington State University and California Polytechnic State University. In 1987, he was a Visiting Fulbright Professor at the University of Lagos in Akoka, Nigeria. In 1999, he will become the Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Professor of American History at the University of Washington.
