Argentine Fingerprint System Topic of Colby Lecture

Julia Rodriguez, faculty fellow in history and Latin American studies at Colby College, will present "National Science in an Immigrant Nation: The Argentine Fingerprint System" Monday, March 15, at 4 p.m. in Olin 1 at Colby. The lecture, part of Colby's Science, Technology and Society Speaker Series, is free of charge and open to all. Refreshments will be served 15 minutes prior.

Rodriguez's lecture will explore the history of dactiloscopy, Argentine fingerprint science. Developed by local police scientists in the 1890s dactiloscopy promised to assist the state in controlling its largely immigrant and politically volatile population. Rodriguez will receive her Ph.D. in history from Columbia University this semester. In September she will be assistant professor of history and women's studies at the University of New Hampshire.
