Radical Feminist Mary Daly at Colby on Book Tour
Mary Daly, Boston College theology professor and feminist, will talk at Colby College about her latest book, Quintessence Realizing the Archaic Future: A Radical Elemental Feminist Manifesto (Beacon Press, 1998). The Spotlight Lecture will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, in the Page Commons Room of Colbyıs Cotter Union. It is free and open to the public.
Daly, a renowned radical feminist philosopher, will speak about Quintessence. Set in 2048, the book exposes and examines the abuses women faced at the end of the twentieth-century. An associate professor of theology at Boston College, Daly has taught women-only classes at the school for 25 years. Dalyıs recent refusal to teach male students in the same feminist ethics class as women has precipitated a debate on sex discrimination and the merits of segregated classes, in addition to a lawsuit by the Center for Individual Rights.
Daly holds doctorates in theology and philosophy from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. She also holds a Ph.D. in religion from St. Maryıs College, Notre Dame. Her books include The Church and the Second Sex, Beyond God the Father and Pure Lust: Elemental Feminist Philosophy.
