
Colby Museum of Art Closed for Holidays
The Colby Museum of Art in Waterville will be closed from Thursday, December 23, through Sunday, December 26, and from Thursday, December 30, through Sunday, January 2. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Currently on exhibit at the museum is "Ancient and New, Low and High: Asian Art from the Colby College Collection." The exhibit, organized by students in Colbys "Survey of Asian Art" course, is on view through March 26. The show illustrates the breadth and variety of the visual arts in Asiafrom Neolithic jugs to modern painting and from folk art to imperial silk gowns.
The Colby Museum of Art is home to an outstanding permanent collection that specializes in American art but includes other treasures, from ancient Asian ceramics to works by Rembrandt, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso. The museum also owns more than 400 paintings, drawings, prints and cut-outs by modern artist Alex Katz. The Joan Whitney Payson Collection of Impressionist Art returns to the museum February 13.
