It features puppets and it's about Christmas, but The Long Christmas Ride Home
, which runs Nov. 10-12, is not a children's play.
Written by Pulitzer-prize winner Paula Vogel, the play deals with challenges faced by a troubled family, from infidelity to suicide. Lynne Conner, chair of the Theater and Dance Department, calls it "a deeply moving meditation on the ways in which interpersonal dynamics can impact young minds."
The play is part of a yearlong interdisciplinary program titled "Reflections of Terrorism
," which aims to probe terrorism-related questions and analyze definitions of terrorism. Is domestic abuse a form of terrorism?
The young characters are portrayed by puppets created by the Freeport-based Figures of Speech Theatre
, a Freeport Maine puppet company with an international reputation. Colby students participated in workshops on the art of operating Bunraku-style puppets.
The show runs Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 10-12 at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater. Tickets are free at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
