The Art Department, Colby Museum, WGSS Program, Spanish Department, Latin American Studies Department, and the Pugh Community Board (PCB) bring you the internationally acclaimed West Coast-based art activist, Favianna Rodriguez! Favianna is a Chicana graphic artist dedicated to the grassroots cause, creating radical and dynamic original posters to promote awareness on topics such as war, immigration, race, gender, sexuality, class, and politics. A well-known and innovative voice in the California and West Coast activist scene, Favianna has exhibited locally and globally at such venues as the Museo del Barrio (New York City), Mexican Fine Arts Center (Chicago, Yerba Nuena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Galería Sin Fronteras (Austin), House of Love & Dissent (Rome), Parco Museum (Tokyo), and various museums in Mexico, Cuba, England, and Belgium. She was a 2005 artist-in-residence at San Francisco's prestigious de Young Museum, a 2007-2008 artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute (Berkeley, CA), and received a 2006 Sea Change Residency from the Gaea Foundation (Provincetown, MA). Rodriguez is also the recipient of a 2005 award from the Center for the Study of Political Graphics. Her non-profit, Tumis, Inc., is a bilingual design studio that helps to integrate art with emerging technologies.

Favianna will give a lecture on art and activism in Ostrove Auditorium at 7 PM, Thurs. October 18. Her lecture will be preceded by a pop up exhibit of her work in Pulver Pavillion through early October.

Be sure not to miss this exciting and singular opportunity to learn about how visual art can be a catalyst for change!

This event is brought to you by the Pugh Community Board (PCB) in collaboration with the Art Department, Colby Museum, WGSS Program, Spanish Department, and Latin American Studies Department. |
