Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the president and the Board of Trustees, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 192nd Commencement weekend at Colby College. Activities begin Friday, May 24, and conclude Sunday, May 26.  Please refer to the schedule for more details. Parents will receive a formal invitation to the ceremony later in the spring. The bookstore offers additional graduation announcements to graduates and families for purchase.

Baccalaureate will be held Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. The service is in Lorimer Chapel, and due to limited seating it is open to faculty and graduates only. Guests may hear the audio broadcast of baccalaureate and watch the procession on the chapel lawn and/or view a telecast in nearby classrooms.

Provided the weather is fair, commencement exercises will be Sunday, May 26, at 10 a.m. on the lawns in front of Miller Library. Seating outside is unlimited and tickets will not be needed. In the event of inclement weather, exercises will be in the Harold Alfond Athletic Center, where the seating capacity is limited. Each graduate will receive three tickets for seating in the gymnasium for the live event, with additional, non-ticketed seating available in the adjacent field house where the ceremony will be available as a telecast.

With the exception of breakfasts and Saturday lunch, which are purchased at the door in the dining hall, meals during commencement weekend require tickets reserved and purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased either by mail, using a check, or online with a credit card. Due to the need for a check or credit card payment in advance, meal reservations are not accepted by telephone. All meal reservations must be postmarked no later than Monday, May 6. Please note that your graduate receives complimentary tickets for his/her meals, and you should therefore not order meals for your son or daughter. Requests for refunds must be postmarked no later than Monday, May 13. Meal tickets ordered by mail or online will be distributed to your student during Senior Week with his or her rain tickets and other commencement related information.  

A professional photographer has been hired for the commencement exercises and each graduate will be photographed receiving his or her diploma. You will receive information directly from the photographer about purchasing these photos of your graduate. Please be aware that because the College must keep the area around the podium clear, you may be unable to take a close-up photograph yourself.
