Greatist.com named Colby the fourth healthiest campus in the country. Rankings were based on food, fitness, and health services. Specifically highlighted were Colby’s fitness classes and campus-grown vegetables served in the dining halls.

Colby Couple Wins $100K Wedding4/07/2012
After submitting a two-minute video explaining why they should win the Real Maine Wedding of the Year contest, Alyssa Kavanagh ’10 and Nick Planeta ’09 collected enough online votes to win the $100,000 wedding. The couple, who met at Colby in 2006, will be married on November 2 in Portland.

Super PACs on Rise, But Not With Women3/31/2012
Representing about one-third of campaign contributions, women are not donating
nearly as much money as men in the 2012 election. Anthony Corrado (government) says that the trend reflects income disparities more than personal interest. “When you look at the fact that the vast majority of contributions of $2,000 or more are coming from the top 1 percent of the population in terms of income, it's not surprising that men are overrepresented (in Super PAC donations)," he said.

Colby Walk Remembers Trayvon3/30/2012
Wearing dark hoodies, about 30 Colby students, faculty, and staff walked across campus in honor of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old shot by a neighborhood watch person in Florida last month. Tionna Haynes ’15 says the walk was to raise awareness about the issue. "Colby just isn't our world," Haynes said. "The whole world is our world.”

Corrado on Function of Super PACs3/27/2012
Anthony Corrado (government) explains the role Super PACs play in the presidential election, where they cannot coordinate with the official campaigns. “The way they function is essentially a parallel presidential campaign,” said Corrado. “The notion that these PACs are independent is nothing more than a legal technicality.”

In one of the tightest U.S. Senate races this year, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is receiving 60 percent of campaign donations from out-of-state donors. Anthony Corrado (government) is not surprised by this support. "Given the tightness for the battle for majority control in the Senate, (candidates in) key contests are raising money from throughout the country," Corrado said.

McClenachan’s Research Shows Surprising Fishing History3/23/2012
Research by Loren McClenachan (environmental studies) shows that for more than 400 years native Hawaiians caught fifty percent more fish than they do now, far exceeding the levels considered sustainable by today’s scientists. The fish population was still able to thrive as a result of strictly-enforced fishing regulations.
