Teach Plus Boston Executive Director and former Boston Public Schools teacher Maria Fenwick (Colby '03) speaks about teachers' roles in urban school reform and education policy-making. Teachers with fewer than ten years of experience now make up a majority of teachers across the United States. At the same time, up to 50% of teachers leave teaching before the fifth year. How can young teachers make an impact and help to modernize the profession so that more top-performing teachers will stay in the classroom? Maria draws from her experience as a teacher and the groundbreaking work of Teach Plus nationwide in the areas of teacher leadership, advocacy, and voice.

Lt. Melissa Maclin '98, U.S. Naval Intelligence, last spoke to a Colby audience nearly five years ago, when U.S. forces were concentrated in Iraq, not Afghanistan. At that time she called our attention to "Afghanistan: The Forgotten War." After a number of tours in Afghanistan, Melissa is now assigned as the liaison between the U.S. Special Operations Command and the CIA. She discussed the current situation in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the killing of bin Laden and the ongoing U.S. role in light of the Obama administration's intentions to reduce our presence there.

Goldfarb Center | Six Minutes To Doomsday: Assessing the State of the Nuclear Threat

Since 1947, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has monitored "how close humanity is to catastrophic destruction," adjusting the hands of its doomsday clock closer to or farther away from midnight in response to events making "doomsday" either more or less likely. The clock has always primarily assessed the threat of nuclear weapons devastation, and presently stands at six minutes to midnight. It has been more than two decades since the end of the Cold War. However, the continued existence of thousands of nuclear weapons, and the possibility that additional countries and/or terrorists might acquire nuclear weapons, poses serious policy concerns. Jessica Varnum '06, NTI Project Manager and Research Associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies addressed what the current nuclear threats are facing the world and how effectively the United States is engaging the international community to address them.

On January 5, 2011, Paul LePage was sworn in as the 74th governor of the State of Maine, the first Franco-American to hold that office. The first year of Governor LePage's term has been far from easy as the Republican former mayor of Waterville has confronted pressing problems concerning the economy and the state budget in his characteristically blunt fashion. On Thursday, Nov. 3, he discussed the state of the state with the Colby and central Maine community.

Denning, a 1992 graduate of Bowdoin College, providing educational
programs for the children of families living in the municipal garbage
dump in Guatemala City. In 2007 Denning, 36, died in Guatemala when a
bus traveling in the wrong direction struck her car. But Safe Passage
continued her mission. It now offers Guatemalan
children and their families educational support, food, medical
assistance, and a chance to socialize, gain confidence, and teach
others.
Richard
Schmaltz was recently named as the new executive director for Safe
Passage and has been involved in the organization since the beginning,
when he served as an advisor to Denning in the establishment of the
early childhood program, from curriculum development to teacher
training to fundraising. Schmaltz will offer insights into the process
of establishing and building a sustainable nonprofit service program,
share experiences working with Guatemala City municipal dump community,
and describe ways for individuals or groups to get involved (featuring
current Colby students who have participated in a Safe Passage service
trip).
The lecture took place on April 13, 2011 at 7 PM in Diamond 122.

In the immediate years following the end of World War II, American Jews, through their communal institutions, went about the process of creating a memorial culture which hallowed the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Text by text, artifact by artifact, and act by act, they experimented with words and deeds to both remember those who had been so ruthlessly killed and to affect changes in the Jewish world and in America. Rather than avoiding the catastrophe, as so many historians have asserted, American Jews considered themselves obliged to remember and to tell themselves, their children and the larger American world about what had happened.

Hasia Diner is the Paul S. and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University, where she directs the Goldstein-Goren Center for American Jewish History. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship for 2010-11. Her recent book, We Remember with Reverence and Love: American Jews and the Myth of Silence after the Holocaust, 1945-1962, won the 2010 National Jewish Book Award for American Jewish Studies.

Professor Diner spoke during the annual Berger Family Holocaust Lecture, on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:00PM in the Pugh Center.
Kato was beaten to death Jan. 26, 2011, shortly after winning a lawsuit against a magazine which had published his name and photograph identifying him as gay and calling for him to be executed. The news of his murder quickly made international headlines and subsequently hit particularly close to home at Colby, as he was an applicant for the 2011 Oak Fellowship for International Human Rights. The Oak Institute and the Bridge hosted a week of events in Kato's honor, including a culminating keynote address by David Kato's close friend and fellow LGBT activist Val Kalende.

Val Kalende is pursuing a master's degree in theological studies with a focus on leadership at the Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kalende is one of the founding members of the LGBT movement in Uganda. She is also a founding member of Freedom and Roam Uganda, the first organization in the LGBT movement of Uganda. Kalende has been at the frontline of the campaign against the anti-homosexuality bill, a legislation that is proposing the death penalty for LGBT people in Uganda. She also worked as a journalist at a leading media company in Uganda. She is an outspoken activist against U.S. evangelicals exporting homophobia to Uganda. Prior to joining EDS, Kalende travelled to the United States to attend the International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the U.S Department of State. While in the U.S, Kalende has addressed members of congress, House of Representatives members, the National Security Council, and several LGBT organizations with the objective of raising awareness on why the oppression of LGBT Ugandans should matter to Americans. Once jailed for campaigning for the recognition of sexual minorities in her country's national HIV/AIDS policy, Kalende says her vision is to see a world where LGBT people will not be judged by their sexual orientation or gender identity but by "the content of their character."

The Tuskegee Airmen, our nation’s first black military airmen, flew
the P-47 “Redtails” in countless bomber escort missions. The squadron
achieved an outstanding record throughout its service during World War
II, which served to challenge racism and institutionalized segregation
at home. Overseas, Master Sergeant James A. Sheppard served his
country, with courage and honor until the war ended in 1945. The legacy
of the Tuskegee Airmen would encourage President Harry Truman to sign
Executive Order 9981 in 1948, which integrated the United States Armed
Forces and set a precedent for desegregation across the country. In
2007 Sheppard received the Congressional Gold Medal by George W. Bush,
along with 300 living Tuskegee Airmen or their widows.
James
A. Sheppard was born in New York City in 1924. He was an aviation
mechanic when he enlisted in the Army Air Force at 18 in
1942, and was immediately assigned to the 100th Fighter Squadron, based
at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. There, he was trained
as a mechanic on the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter aircraft until the
squadron was shipped to Italy. Mr. Sheppard has given this presentation
in a variety of formats across the country, and to a squadron bearing
the Tuskegee Airmen's historic number (332nd) that is currently serving
in Iraq. Though he has shared his experiences through this multimedia
presentation with countless audiences, he gave his first lecture at
Colby exactly 20 years ago. He is also the proud grandfather of current
Colby student Danielle Sheppard '11.
Major Sergeant Sheppard spoke on Tuesday, March 15, at 7PM in Ostrove Auditorium.
