MELLON HONORS COTTER
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has announced that it will honor Bill
Cotter for his achievement and his seniority among college presidents
with a $200,000 grant that may be used for discretionary purposes. Bill
says he will use the grant to work with the faculty in bolstering the
Colby
Precepts and to help in minority recruiting and campus support.
ON OUR KIDS
Three Colby children were in the world premiere of the ballet Holly and Ivy
over the holidays -- Julie Yeterian (Ed & Margaret), Zeben
Ashton (Cate & Don), and Anna Sagaser (Elizabeth &
John). Performances were in Pittsfield and, later, in Camden.
OFF THE RHODES
Our list of Colby Rhodes Scholars skipped over William Carter, Class
of 1938. So, Will Polkinghorn is the sixth. Before him were
Jennifer Barber, 1978; William Carter, 1938; John
Rideout, 1936; Abbott Smith, 1926; and Harold Soule,
1904. Carter and Rideout, it happens, were both at Oxford at the same time.
Sorry Bill.

THELMA PLUSQUELLIC
1918-1998
Honor to the memory of Thelma Plusquellic, long-time secretary in
the registrar's office and assistant to the dean of students, who died
December 12 at her home in Waterville. Thelma was a staffer who, like so
many others, masterfully managed things for her bosses with grace, charm
and efficiency. She was popular among students, many of whom found a visit
to Thelma was an adequate substitute for a visit to the dean. She had good
advice and she knew the Colby ropes. A memorial service will be held in
Lorimer Chapel on Monday, Dec. 21, 2 p.m. The Rev. Ron Morrell will
officiate.
JOHN S. MIZNER
1932-1998
Colby mourns the passing of John Mizner, a 35-year veteran of the
English department who has died of cancer less than a year after his
retirement. John, who for various periods chaired both the department and
the Humanities Division, became the Charles A. Dana Professor of English in
1994. He specialized in British Romantic poetry and introduced courses in
literature and the history of the Holocaust and existentialism. Survivors
include his wife, Alison; daughter, Sarah; and son, David. A memorial
service will be held at Lorimer Chapel at 10 a.m. on Sunday, January 3.
