HAPPY NEW CENTURY!
When the largest capital campaign in Colby's history ends on New
Year's Eve, the total will have exceeded the original $100 million goal
by nearly 50%. The actual number will exceed $145 million, making it
the largest single fund-raising effort in State of Maine history.
Results, evident all across campus, include seven major new buildings,
24 new endowed professorships, expanded resources for financial aid,
and extensive renovations in residential, academic and athletic
facilities.
MORE MUSEUM KUDOS
"Without a doubt, this [Colby's] is the best art museum in the
state," art critic Judy Harrison wrote in the Bangor Daily News on Dec.
4.The BDN ran a big feature on The Maine Art Museum Trail in its
Weekend Edition and reviewed each of the seven member museums,
including Portland and the Farnsworth. "In addition to its phenomenal
collection," Harrison said, "the layout, design and lighting [at Colby]
are the best in Maine by far. This is a museum that does not simply
welcome visitors, it makes them feel at home."
ELITE FICTION
When the Boston Globe's chief book critic wrote about the best fiction of 1999, she picked just four books--among them Close Range: Wyoming Stories,
by Annie Proulx ’57. Proulx had a story in one of the other picks: Best
American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike. The two
novels in Gail Caldwell's succinct list were A Star Called Henry, by Roddy Doyle and A Gesture of Life, by Chang-rae Lee.
TALK SHOW TOPICS
David Firmage (environmental studies) and students Carrie Brooke
’00, Ilana Hobson ’00 and Helen Sofaer ’02 were featured on the
television show Our Towns shown earlier this month on FrontierVision.
The group talked with host Robbi Lawler about Jan-Plan environmental
field courses and the recent study of East Pond's water quality by the
Problems in Environmental Science class.
JACK DONALD FONER 1911-1999
Jack Donald Foner, distinguished historian and pioneer defender of
human rights, died earlier this week in New York City. He was 88. Jack
taught at Colby from 1969-1976 and returned twice, in 1983 and 1985, as
a visiting scholar in residence. Through his efforts and leadership in
1969, Colby emerged as a leader in black studies. He received an
honorary doctor of laws degree from Colby in 1982. He is survived by
his wife, Liza; a son, Eric, a professor of history at Columbia
University, of Manhattan; two brothers, Moe, of Manhattan, and Henry,
of Brooklyn; and a grandaughter. A Colby memorial service will be held
Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. in Lorimer Chapel.
COLBY CAN DO
Justin Gallagher ’02, a geology and computer science major, will begin in January as manager of the Houghton-Mifflin web pages The Earth Today and In the News,
on-line resources for information about major geological events around
the world. Justin is the first undergraduate student ever to be given
responsibility for these pages that are linked to the introductory text
used in Geology 141 and were previously managed by graduate students.
Check out www.geologylink.com/today/ and www.geologylink.com/news/ after the first of the year to see Justin's handiwork; both also are accessible from the Colby Geology home page.
DEBRA ON DALY
The Nov. 7 New York Times Education Life supplement had a
three-page feature about Boston College's gadfly Mary Daly and quoted
Debra Campbell (religion) prominently. Claiming that Daly's radicalism
has lost its context, the piece said, "I think we've been cruel to her
because she's not hip," said Debra, who teaches a seminar on Professor
Daly's work at Colby College. "Mary doesn't go along with the current;
she didn't when she started out. She never quite fit in."
COLBY IN THE NEWS
Colby made the Publisher's Picks list in The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education
in November. It's a good thing; so did Bates, Bowdoin, UMO and USM. The
opening of the 9,000-square-foot Lunder Wing was reported in the
Nov.-Dec. edition of Museum News magazine out of Washington,
D.C. When the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art closes for
three years of renovations, some of its art treasures will hit the road
to tour. That doesn't happen till next summer when a show titled Modernism and Abstraction makes its first stop at the Colby Museum of Art, beginning Aug. 1.
