REGISTERED TRADEMARKS
-------------------------------------------------------
It's official, finally: Colby's "new" logo, adopted in 2002, is a
registered trademark. The application ran into a hitch when we learned
that a corporation in the British Virgin Islands had an application to
produce "Colby" clothing. The College proved long-term use (e.g. a 1894
baseball team photo with Colby shirts), but registration took a few
years. A trademark for "Reaching the World," the name of the capital
campaign, sailed through, but only after a trial run with "Engaging the
World" revealed that Dickinson College has a trademark for that phrase.
Colby's mule logo and the updated Colby seal also are registered
trademarks. With trademarks come rules; please check with
Communications if you have questions about proper use of these images.

TAPING FOR TV
-------------------------------------------------------
Every Saturday at noon on Portland's Fox 23, students from Maine
colleges and universities debate political issues on the show "Youth in
Maine." Usually, participants Christopher Appel '07, Henry Beck '09, Joshua Handelman '07, and Ralph Kettell '09
go to Portland for taping, but on Wednesday, December 6, the show comes
to Colby. Filming -- in front of an audience -- begins at 4 p.m. in
Olin 1.

GREEN LEEDERSHIP IN PPD
-------------------------------------------------------
Colby’s entire project management team responsible for construction
projects is now accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program. Congratulations to Pat Murphy, Gordon Cheesman, Dale Deblois, Joe Feely, and Gus Libby (all
PPD), who earned the credential. The LEED green building rating system
is the national benchmark for sustainable construction, and
certification as a LEED-accredited professional requires experience in
green building construction in addition to passing an exam. Pat said
that, given Colby's focus on sustainability, "It's one of the College's
goals to build sustainable buildings and we need to be looking at
renovations and other projects in a green way."

PRODUCTION BY THE NUMBERS
-------------------------------------------------------
Oregon Public Broadcasting and Annenberg Media are developing a
multimedia math course intended as professional development for
teachers and the general public. It will include 13 half-hour videos,
Web pages, and a book. OPB contacted Fernando Gouvêa
(mathematics) for help assembling an advisory committee, and he was
since named one of the project's steering advisors. Production started
with a weekend of work in October, bringing together mathematicians,
teachers, producers, and scriptwriters. Fernando describes it as an
"interesting -- and largely successful -- experiment in cross-cultural
communication." See similar projects online.

SMALL COLBY WORLD

John Linscott '51 and
his wife, Judy, on a cruise to Bermuda this fall, asked if they might
share a table with another couple for breakfast. Colby came up in
conversation, and, lo and behold, their host, Dick Bowen '51 (traveling with his wife, Lucy), was not just a fellow alum, but a classmate.
