Clinic Defense
Cold
early morning
Shy begins to brighten
though I see no sun
They send me to keep an eye out for any suspicious-looking cars
Vigorously swinging my arms I try to shake some reason
into my circulation system
I see
a car moving at a slower pace than necessary
to make a turn
I run to join the line of defense
Arms linked
Legs stabilized
Trained to respond
To the masses who try to push us over Who try to squeeze between our legs
Fanatics rush to beat the escorts to the old blue Pontiac
whose white vinyl top makes me squint
as it reflects the morning light
They thrust literature in Her face
Pictures of Jesus and bloody fetuses
Escorts help Her out
An act which seems to take more effort than it should
Do I look to you like I could be having an abortion?
She asks
Nostrils flaring Gray hair blowing in the wind
