Contemporary Art and Performance: TD226 / AR224
“Contemporary Art and Performance” focuses on global art from the 1960s to the present, examining how globalization, imperialism, and neoliberalism have impacted contemporary artistic production. Throughout the semester, we’ll explore how cultural production mirrors the global flows of capital and people and what said circulations mean for artists’ production in relation to geopolitical and economic contexts. Together, we will study the rise of the curator, biennial, and art fair; and the role protest groups hold in shaping arts discourses and practices.
Because of the embodied nature of many of these subject areas, the course emphasizes performance, performative, and embodied practices. We will examine genres like: performance and body art, post-modern dance, experimental jazz, relational aesthetics, Afrofuturism, Gutai, Viennese Actionism, as well as institutional critique, conceptual art, and post-minimalism. Students will hone skills in performance and visual analysis by doing a number of writing assignments, examining artworks from the Colby College Museum of Art, and trying out certain embodied performance strategies.
