NEW COURSE! Big History: Critique and Counterproposal

“Big History” aims to tell the story of the universe from the Big Bang to the present and into the future. In this course we will read and critique Big History from the perspectives of history of science and world cultures. Students will construct counter-narratives of what universal macro-history would look like if based on the scientific assumptions of earlier eras and on traditional cosmologies. We will also evaluate some of the (mainly pedagogical) strengths of Big History as promoted by its supporters. The seminar involves readings, weekly discussions, student-led presentations, visiting guest scholars, a poster for CLAS, a museum visit, and a final research paper – Professor Fleming
