Habitat for Humanity (HFH) has been active at Colby ever since Traci Speed ’03 got the first group of motivated students together 4 years ago. Habitat has been an official club at Colby ever since and receives funding annually from the Student Government Association. In fall 2003, Colby Habitat for Humanity (Colby HFH) was recognized as an official campus chapter by Habitat for Humanity International. Colby HFH works closely with Waterville Area Habitat for Humanity (WAHFH) to provide help fight for decent, affordable housing the Waterville area.
Colby HFH was formed shortly after the WAHFH affiliate was established and helped in the process of preparing to build the first house in the Waterville Area. Students served on the WAHFH committees that selected a partner family, found a site, and planned for the future building and coordination of volunteers. Without a local Habitat house to work on, the original members of Habitat made regular trips to help build houses with the neighboring Augusta and Brunswick affiliates. Construction of WAHFH’s first house, located on High St. in Waterville, began in June 2003.
Building continued through the fall, winter, and spring until the house was completed in June 2004. Take a look! The success was made possible with the help of scores of dedicated Colby HFH members working together with the many local volunteers as well as the partner family, the Beckims.
Lot clearing has begun on WAHFH’s 2nd house, located on Barnet St. Once again, Colby HFH members are active in the committees of Waterville Habitat that are working to have construction begin in spring 2005. When called upon, Colby HFH is ready to provide hard-working volunteers to help make the 2nd building project a success. Currently, Colby HFH is sending needed volunteers to neighboring affiliates, such as to Brunswick where they are trying to finish their house before winter sets in.
