Weather, Climate, and Society of Afghanistan

Source: CIA World Factbook

The diverse nature of Afghanistan’s weather has impacted the country’s culture and society in many ways. After the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, US troops were faced with not only the challenge of overcoming the Taliban, but Afghanistan’s weather as well.  The climate has also significantly impacted the production of wheat, a legal crop, and opium, an illegal crop, both of which have an enormous effect on Afghanistan’s economy and the prosperity of Afghanis.  Additionally, the harsh weather has made if difficult to develop or even maintain the nation’s political infrastructure.  Even Afghanistan’s diverse population is caused by and reflective of its unique weather patterns.  Understanding the weather in Afghanistan is important, for without its harsh and diverse weather, Afghanistan would not encounter the cultural and societal challenges it faces today.
