Conclusions of our Semester Study on Afghanistan

Because we live in the United States, a developed country in which the weather is easily overcome by technology, it is easy to forget the amazing power that weather can have.  It was interesting to record and track the weather in Kabul for three months straight because the weather seemed relatively static.  By researching the weather of the nation as a whole, however, it became apparent that it was more diverse than we initially thought.  We learned that the weather actually has an affect on almost all aspects of life in Afghanistan: infrastructure, agriculture, military, and everyday life are heavily influenced by the variations in climate that occur on a seasonal and day-to-day basis.  Furthermore, part of the difficulty in repairing the country from centuries of constant conflict and achieving levels of development equal to more advanced nations are attributable to the dramatic extremes of the weather that make it difficult to predict, control, and overcome some of the challenges.  This project in its entirety was a very effective means of broadening our knowledge of the importance of weather and climate on society.
