Lab 1

Protocol

  1. Draw a circle 1 inch in diameter.
  2. From the bottom of that circle, draw a vertical line 2.5in long.
  3. .5in below the circle, draw a line perpendicular to the vertical line moving to the right.
  4. Rpt. step 3, except this time draw 1.5in to the left.
  5. At the bottom of the vertical line in step 2, draw a diagonal line down and to the right (2in)
  6. At the bottom of the line in step 5, draw a horizontal line to the right .5in
  7. Rpt. step 5, except this time to the left
  8. Rpt. step 6, except this time the left

Writeup:

The protocol we developed worked fairly well, especially after eliminating some ambiguities and making clearer commands. I did find, however, that even if a command was somewhat vague, if enough of the picture had been completed then the artist used their basic knowledge of the shape to complete it. With more parameters it became even clearer what the drawing should look like, so the artist did not need to use any prior knowledge, just the details of the commands. The parameters we used were for the diameter of the circle and the lengths of the lines. The more detailed and concise protocol with parameters and specific spacial commands worked better because the artist knew exactly where to put each shape or line. By making more precise commands and eliminating general directions, our protocol was fairly easy to read and execute.
