(1) The Senshu-Gakko Scholarship is designed for students
who wish to study at a Japanese professional training school sponsored
by Monbusho. Applicants should have
knowledge of the Japanese language and be US citizens.
(2) Applicants must study the Japanese language and receive Senshu-gakko education in that language.
(3) The scholarship is tenable for 3 years [from April 1999 to March 2002]. Applicants must be US citizens, be at least 1 8 years old and less than 22 [by April 1, 1999], be high school graduates [by March 1999], and be in good health.
(4) The grant includes round trip airfare, exemption from all
school fees, arrival
allowance of 25,000 yen, and a stipend of 142,500 yen/month.
(5) All applicants will be required to take an academic examination (mathematics, English, and Japanese) and an interview [Tuesday, September 1, for 1998]. You will be notified of the exact time after we receive your application.
(6) Those who wish to apply for the Senshu-Gakko Monbusho Scholarship at the Consulate General of Japan in Boston must be living in New England at the time of application. Anyone awarded a scholarship through the Consulate office will depart for Japan from Logan Airport. Those not living in New England should contact the Consulate nearest them for application deadlines and procedures.
(7) The application deadline is [Thursday, August 20, 1998]. Applications will be accepted through the mail only; late applications will not be accepted.

II. RESEARCH STUDENT
(1) The Monbusho Research Student award is designed for researchers to study at Japanese universities without earning degrees. Applicants should have knowledge of the Japanese language and must be US citizens.
(2) The Japanese Government offers scholarships to students who
wish to study at
Japanese universities as non-degree research students. The study area
must be in the same field as the applicant has studied (or is now studying)
or a related field.
(3) Applicants should have a good understanding of the Japanese language and be willing to study and receive instruction in that language.
(4) The term of stay is either 2 years from April, or one year and a half from October. Applicants must be US citizens, under the age of 35 [as April 1,1999], be graduates of 4-year college or university by March or September of 1999, and be in good health.
(5) The grant includes round trip airfare, exemption from all
school fees, arrival
allowance of 25,000 yen, and a stipend of 185,500 yen/month.
(6) Mandatory Japanese language testing and interviews will be held
[on Wednesday,
September 2, for 1998] with the possibility of some interviews being
scheduled for the following day. All applicants should arrive at the Consulate
in Boston at 9:00 a.m. for the 3 hour Japanese language exam; interviews
will follow. You will be notified of your interview time that morning.
(7) Those who wish to apply for the Research Student Monbusho
Scholarship at the
Consulate General of Japan in Boston must be living in New England
at the time of
application. Anyone awarded a scholarship through our office will depart
for Japan from Logan Airport. Those not living in New England should contact
the Consulate nearest them for application deadlines and procedures.
