RECREATIONAL FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES Staff members may use many College facilities and services by merely showing a Colby identification card. In general, facilities and activities are available whenever the facilities are open and when student use does not preclude their availability to employees. Harold Alfond Athletic Center The Harold Alfond Athletic Center offers Colby students and staff one of the finest athletic facilities in the Northeast. The Alfond Center includes Wadsworth Gymnasium, five glass-backed Dunaway Squash Courts, the Alfond ice arena, an olympic-size swimming pool, four indoor tennis courts, a 220-yard track, and a 5,300-square-foot fitness center. The fitness center includes free weights, Nautilus and Bodymaster machines, squat racks, Stairmaster Gravitron, stepmills and stair-climbing machines, treadmills, and recumbent and regular Lifecycles. One floor above the fitness center is an aerobics/exercise studio. The Alfond Center is generally reserved for faculty and staff use from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. Changing facilities are located in the women's and men's locker rooms in the Alfond Center. A limited number of lockers are allocated for use by staff, subject to availability. Interested staff should contact the equipment manager. In addition to a number of athletic fields and cross-country trails, the Alfond Track, and the 10 Alfond-Wales outdoor tennis courts are available for use by staff. Each fall the Department of Physical Education and Athletics circulates announcements of time and conditions for employee and family members' use of athletic facilities. Instruction on equipment use and fitness information programs are available during the academic year from Colby's training staff. Upon request, "Colby Junior Club" I.D.'s may be issued to children (age 6 and up) of faculty and staff, who are also welcome to use the athletic facilities under rules and schedules announced from time to time. Colby-Hume Center The Colby-Hume Recreation Center, a ten-acre parcel of land on Snow Pond (Messalonskee Lake) donated by Alan and Dorothy Hume, is available for picnics and outdoor recreation for employees and their families. Facilities available for general College use include a picnic area with charcoal cooking pits, a small beach for swimming, and two small bath/changing houses. There is also a large work-shop barn and a shed used by the College crew team to store its rowing shells. Individuals and family users do not need to make special arrangements to use the property during daylight hours. Colby groups of up to 75 persons may inquire about making arrangements to use the facilities by contacting the Office of Special Programs. Staff are encouraged to use the woodshop and forge by making arrangements with Dr. Alan Hume. Directions to the Colby-Hume Center are available from the Office of Special Programs, the Scheduling Office, and the Office of Personnel Services. Other Outdoor Activities Gardeners may be interested in a Colby garden plot (20 X 50 feet) on College-owned land off Washington Street near the campus. Workers from Physical Plant plow and harrow the land each spring, and staked-out individual plots can be reserved on a first-come/first-served basis. The Personnel Office will direct employees to the College official who is responsible for assignment of plots. On a limited basis, camping equipment may be loaned from the Colby Outing Club. Employees should contact the Outing Club directly during the academic year and the Student Activities Office when the College is not in session. |
