CAMPUS SAFETY AND SECURITY In order to provide a safe environment for living, working, and learning, the Security Department provides security, safety, and dispatching services 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. For a listing of security services and information contact Security at ext. 3345. The College has established procedures for fire, medical, and other safety incidents. Fire The proper response to fire or extensive smoke in buildings on campus is to pull a fire alarm and then leave the building as quickly as possible through the nearest exit. Please remember to use stairwells do not use the elevator. Do not re-enter the building until the Security Department staff or fire department official signals that it is safe to return. Since there is a sprinkler system in every building on campus and the response time of the local fire department is short, employees are neither expected nor trained to engage in firefighting. Medical In the event of a medical emergency, the Security Office should be contacted immediately at extension 3911. During the academic year, Security and Colby Emergency Response (CER) respond to medical emergencies on campus. Security Officers receive basic first-aid training, and CER is a group of radio-dispatched student emergency medical technicians (EMTs). When the College is not in session, the Security Office is responsible for responding to medical emergencies. Local emergency medical response services are contacted, when appropriate, by either Security or CER. Call Boxes Colby has installed 11 emergency response boxes around campus generally near sidewalks, parking lots, and other frequently traveled areas. By activating the call-box, a user will be able to speak directly to the dispatcher in the Security Office. A Security Officer will be dispatched to respond to the call location. Security Advisories In the event of a serious incident, emergency security advisories are posted throughout campus, serving as a warning notice of potential danger. The advisories generally include a notice of the potential danger and a description of possible suspects, vehicle, last known location, etc. IDENTIFICATION CARDS Colby issues identification cards -- the ColbyCard -- to continuing employees, and some categories of temporary employees, and their spouses. The card allows access without charge to most Colby facilities and events, including the library, athletic complex, and most cultural events. The card serves as an exterior door key for some campus buildings and may be used to store value for certain convenience purchases, such as personal copies and Spa items. Cards are issued by the ColbyCard office, and must be returned upon termination from Colby. PARKING Colby provides extensive, free parking for staff, students, and visitors. Cars must be registered with the Department of Security located in Roberts Union. A parking sticker must be affixed to the left rear window, and vehicles must be parked in designated areas, not on lawns, fire lanes, or along roadways. Colby accepts no liability for loss or damage to employee vehicles. For additional information about vehicle registration and parking information, please contact the Department of Security. |
