James A. Porter
Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics

Jim returns to Colby, his undergraduate alma mater (B.A. 1995, in physics and classics), as a visiting assistant professor here in the physics department. He obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from Cornell University in 2001 and spent the last five years as a postdoctoral research associate at Dartmouth College.

His research interests are focused on modeling structural and thermodynamic properties of metals and semiconductors (over a wide range of densities) and on exploring the properties of pure fluids and fluid mixtures using both analytical methods as well as computer simulation techniques.

In his spare time, Jim enjoys reading, researching his family history, and watching (when in season) his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.
