You
are invited to participate in a research study that involves language choice
and group membership. You will receive participation credit to be applied
to your Introduction to Psychology course requirement.

We
ask that you read this form and ask any qustions you may have before agreeing
to be in the study. You are free to withdraw your consent and to discontinue
participation in the experiment at any time.

The
purpose of this study is to examine how people describe others and how
those descriptions relate to group membership. If you agree to participate
in this study, you will be asked to complete a survey.

Your
responses in this study will remain confidential and anonymous. The records
in this study will be kept private. Your name will not be placed on any
of the questionnaires you complete. In any published report, we will not
include any information that would make it possible to identify a participant.
Research records will be kept in a locked file; only the researchers will
have access to the records.

Your
decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or
future relations with Colby College, the Department of Psychology or the
researchers. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at
any time without affecting those relationships, and you will still receive
credit for participating. If you feel that any questions are too embarrassing
or personal, you may skip those items or stop completing the questions
without penalty.

will be answered.

For the Benefit
of a Minor-Age Research Participant

I
understand that my child, student name, will be participating in psychological
research for which s/he will be completing one or more survey packets.
Student First Name will receive one participation credit for each hour
of research participation; credit will be applied to his/her Introduction
to Psychology course requirement.
I
understand that the researcher will answer any questions my child or I
may have regarding the prodecures of participation. I realize that
at any time, either my child or myself are free to withdraw consent, at
which point Student First Name may discontinue participation in the research
with no penalty. I also understand that I am not abdicating any legal
rights that may protect my minor child.

Name's participation in this research is voluntary.
I
have the assurance of the researchers that Student First Name's responses
in this study will remain confidential and anonymous.
At
the conclusion of the study, any questions that my child or I may have
about the research will be answered and we will be told whom to contact
if we have further questions.
