Allan James McNicol

CURRICULUM VITAE

Allan McNicol was born in Australia. He did an undergraduate degree in Greek and Latin and an M.A. in Biblical and Patristic Greek at Abilene Christian University. He finished the latter degree in 1967. Abraham Malherbe and Everett Ferguson were his major professors. It was during this time that he developed an interest in critical study of the New Testament. In l969 he graduated from Yale (B.D.). Considerable work was done under Nils Dahl where an interest in the classical and Christian literature of the Greco-Roman world at the time of early Christianity was expanded to include the study of the various Judaisms of this period. This interest culminated in doctoral work at Vanderbilt under Lou Silberman, Leander Keck, and Paul Meyer. There a considerable amount of work revolved around a study of apocalyptic Judaism and the connection of this phenomenon with the New Testament. This culminated in 1974 with his doctoral dissertation, "The Relationship of the Image of the Highest Angel in Judaism to the High Priest Concept in Hebrews." Since then McNicol has pursued a persistent line of research in the general area of the rise of esoteric movements in Judaism in the Greco-Roman period and the historical and theological connections between these movements, the earthly Jesus, and the rise and development of early Christianity. The latest fruit of this work was a monograph Jesus’ Directions for the Future (Mercer, 1996).

McNicol’s current interest in the Gospels is a natural development built on this foundation. This is supplemented by an interest in contemporary hermeneutical issues of narrative and biblical theology and its implications for the church. This was stimulated by his studies at Yale.

Allan McNicol is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and has served as President of the South-West region. He is also a member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS). Currently McNicol serves as an elder of the University Church of Christ, Austin, Texas.

Allan McNicol is married and has two children, Robert and Chris. His wife, Patricia McNicol, is a performing musician and teaches piano in Austin.
