Abstract/Note: This article investigates the significance of Jesus's work as a carpenter (tekton) for understanding his life and ministry. Jesus is called a carpenter only once in the New Testament (Mark 6:3). Since an occupation is an important expression of a person's life, "a clearer comprehension of Jesus's trade holds the promise of a better understanding of the man behind the kerygma of the Christian community". Herod Antipas in 3 BC began to build Sepphoris, just four miles north of Nazareth, as his new Hellenistic capital. The author explores the possible influences on Jesus and his world resulting from this major construction project.

Abstract/Note: The essay examines the issues posed by the existence of an unusual number of polemical midrashim featuring religious debates between Rabbi Jose ben Halafta [of Sepphoris], a 2d century CE Palestinian sage, and a "matrona". Through careful analysis of the texts involved, it appears probable that they reflect the Jewish-Gnostic confrontation of that period. These debates, whether historical or literary, present important elements from the arsenal of gnostic attacks on the biblical God and the rabbinic refutations of these attacks and reveal much about the methodologies of gnostic scriptural exegesis and rabbinic counter-exegesis.
