To change your Colby password

From any networked computer , use a Telnet application(such as Telnet, NetTerm,TeraTerm or any of the many available free over the Web) to connect to colby0 (ie. the academic host). **OS X users: there is a Dock shortcut to connect to colby0- refer to the booklet that came with your computer, or run your mouse over the Dock icons until you see "colby0" pop up.**

  1. Launch the Telnet application.
  2. Go to the File menu and choose "Open Connection"
  3. In the host address field, type "colby0.colby.edu" (no quotes).
  4. A window will pop up, asking you for your username. Type in your login name. This is the first part of your e-mail address, for example: jqpublic.
  5. You will be prompted for your password. Type in your Colby password.

  6. At the next prompt, type in chpass
  7. At the prompt, type in your current password.
  8. Type in your new password and hit return. What you type will not show up on the screen.
  9. You will be prompted for your new password again. Type it in again and hit return.
  10. If your new password is valid, you will be told that you password has been successfully changed.

Things to remember:

The requirements for a Colby password include:

  • Minimum 8 (not 6!) characters, maximum 30 characters.
  • Punctuation is required.
  • No spaces or tabs. Also avoid pound sign (#) and at sign (@). While # and @ are legitimate punctuation characters, some terminal emulators map these keys to erase and kill characters.
  • mixed case is recommended

Also, please remember that no one else should know your password. No one else should ever use your personal, non-transferable account.
