Julie W. de Sherbinin received her education in Russian literature and Russian area studies at Amherst College (B.A.), Yale University (M..A.), and Cornell University (Ph.D.). She teaches all levels of the Russian language, as well as courses in 19th and 20th century Russian prose (in English translation), Russian women writers, 20th century Russian poetry, the development of the short story, and human rights in world literature. Her primary scholarly interests focus on nineteenth and early twentieth century literature. She has published articles on Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Chekhov and Blok. She is co-founder of The North American Chekhov Society, ten-year editor of the NACS scholarly bulletin (1991-2001), and author of Chekhov and Russian Religious Culture: The Poetics of the Marian Paradigm (Northwestern University Press). Her most recent work looks at female madness in the Russian tradition, and she is embarking on a project that challenges TolstoyÕs views on social class. In addition to her enthusiasm for Russian culture, she is committed to increasing awareness around issues of social justice in the United States.
