As a result of attending this program participants will:

- Understand what the medical examiner needs to bring to a scene of
death
- Critically evaluate common injury patterns
- Consider in depth guidelines for designating a “manner of death”
- Review the current approach to and interpretation of toxicology issues
- Appreciate the interpretation of the neuropathology of childhood
injuries
In addition, other timely topics including currently available autopsy procedures
and techniques, an approach to the investigation of small plane
crashes, organization of investigative systems, a review of doctors who kill,
bizarre poisonings, and the epidemiology of drug abuse will be presented.
An optional afternoon session will give the participants an opportunity to
work hands-on with the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team, the
Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Maine
police computer crime specialists, and the faculty in an exercise designed to
teach scene processing and evidence recovery and interpretation. Evening
sessions will focus on informal presentations that will provide the participants
with the opportunity to present cases of their own for discussion with
the faculty and with each other. The course is well known for the informal
give and take of these sessions, the perfect mixture of scholarship and congeniality
for the close of each day at Colby. This educational experience is
relaxed and informal. Please come join us in Maine this summer.
