George John Mitchell was born in Waterville, Maine, and was educated at Bowdoin College and Georgetown University. He was admitted to the Maine bar and, in the 1960s, served as a trial lawyer in the U.S. Department of Justice and as executive assistant to Senator Edmund Muskie. In 1980 he was appointed to the United States Senate to finish Muskie's term, and he remained a Senator until 1996. Mitchell was a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee and took an active role in passing the clean air laws. He is the author of Earth on Fire, a plea for environmental action. He is currently serving as a special advisor on Ireland to the President and Secretary of State.
