Driving and Renting Vehicles for Official Club Travel
A procedure is in place which permits some students, who meet specified criteria, to rent vehicles and drive to various club events and activities for official club business. Here's what you have to do to obtain "Colby Driver Approval:"
- Complete the "Colby College Driver Sign-Up Form." This form can be obtained at the Security Office or in Stu-A.
- All drivers must hold a valid drivers license. The director of security must approve any exceptions.
- The Security Office needs the information (completed form) at least 21 days before any driving occurs to allow Colby's insurer to check the applicant's driving record. Any driver from the following states (these states have privacy laws) must obtain a copy of their own driving record before they will be permitted to drive for the college: AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, GA, IL, MI, OH, PA, RI, TX, and Washington, DC. Holders of international or other-country licenses must obtain their driving record or a letter, in English, from the appropriate regulating body stating that the driver has no infractions.
- Applicants must attach a photocopy of the front and back of your driver's license and return the completed form to the Security Office.
- All new drivers must contact Bruce McDougal, Director of
Safety at x3179 to sign up for the driver safety course to become a
certified Colby driver.
- Colby College reserves the right to deny driving privileges
to any student, faculty, or staff member on any vehicle owned,
leased, or rented by the college.
- Once the form has been completed and approved, students may rent
vehicles at BUDGET by using their club name and account number.
Vehicles can be used for official club travel only. Using vehicles
for personal convenience (rides home during break, personal travel,
etc.) is strictly prohibited, and may result in loss of funds, loss
of driving privileges, and/or other sanctions.
- Students are obligated to obey all current driving laws,
including the mandatory use of seat belts for all passengers at all
times.
Defensive Driving
The following is an outline of what you will learn in Colby's driver safety course.
The number one hazard facing Colby students and employees and, indeed, all Americans, is being a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle. Traffic related collisions are the number one cause of accidental fatalities and permanent disabilities in the U.S. The College offers classroom training to all student and staff drivers. The following is an itemized summary of that training:
- All passengers will be instructed to wear a seatbelt at all times.
- Intoxicated individuals will not be allowed in the vehicle.
- Only the Colby-certified driver who signed out the vehicle or their Colby-certified designee is allowed to drive it.
- All College drivers must abide by traffic regulations at all times.
Defensive Driving:
- Watch vehicle speed. The perception of speed in vans and larger vehicles can be deceptive, leading to higher speeds than warranted.
- Use headlights at all times.
- Keep to the main roads. Unplanned side trips increase risk.
- The driver will follow the two-second/four-second rule of following
distance. Pull safely to the roadside when being tailgated.
- The driver will be rested to avoid fatigue and must stop when tired.
- Common sense must be used regarding weather conditions. No game, meeting, appointment, or class is worth risking a collision.
- Special care must be taken when backing up.
- Use the phone number on the card in the glove box to report mechanical problems, or call 872-3345.
- For problems or emergencies, call Colby Security at 872-3345.
Remember, if a collision happens, even a minor one, the driver must report it to the authorities as soon as possible. Exchange registration, insurance card,
