Other Support for Student Research

Students' Special Project Fund: The Dean of Faculty, in conjunction with the academic division chairs, awards grants to students for scholarly and creative activities that build on a background of appropriate preparation in a specific field. Grants are limited to a maximum of $400 for one project per student per academic year. Grants are awarded to students doing advanced work under the guidance of a faculty mentor, such as an Independent Study, Honors project, or Senior Scholar project. The proposed project must be based on a coherent program of study in a specific academic area, and must represent work beyond or outside of that required for a major.

Special Internship Awards: The Linda K. Cotter Internship Award Fund was created to assist students with the expenses incurred in doing unpaid internships either in January or during the summer. Awards are need-based and are administered by Special Internship Awards Committee. Preference is given to students pursuing unpaid internships at non-profit, humanitarian, scientific research (non-profit), or governmental organizations.

Colby Library Services: Colby's library facilities incorporate state-of-the-art information processing systems, including standard Internet access to a consolidated Web-based catalogue for Colby, Bowdoin, and Bates Colleges. This provides the ability to search simultaneously for information at all three schools. In addition, document delivery via Interlibrary Loan has recently been enhanced with a more sophisticated Web-based system.

Science Equipment: Colby is committed to acquiring and maintaining cutting-edge equipment to facilitate student and faculty research. All research-quality instrumentation is accessible to our students. Our philosophy is to introduce students to instrumentation early and repeatedly throughout their programs of study. Our science faculty strongly believe that competence with laboratory instrumentation is essential to learning to design and carry out scientific experiments. To support this effort, the Natural Sciences Division has a full-time instrument repair technician and a full-time computer workstation technician.

Science Laboratory Facilities: The College is continually working to insure that state-of-the-art facilities are in place to support student-faculty research efforts. Most science facilities are located in a newly constructed building or in existing buildings that have been extensively renovated. All science buildings are connected by skyways to facilitate interdisciplinary student-faculty collaborations and the sharing of research-grade equipment. Students are able to avail themselves of the same facilities and equipment as their faculty mentors.
