Annual gifts from alumni provide flexible, unrestricted support for faculty and students each year. The alumni fund is as essential to Colby's operations as endowment. Participation--the total number of alumni who give each year--is used by many foundations and national college ranking organizations as an indicator of confidence in the College and a factor in funding decisions. A pre-campaign survey of alumni showed that although 86 percent thought Colby was worthy of support, only 45 percent actually gave, a lower percentage than at many or our peers institutions.
     The Campaign for Colby set the goal of increasing alumni participation from 45 to 50 percent, and a group of alumni and friends established the Participation Challenge to add $500,000 in endowment funds if we reached this goal.
     In 1999, the Campaign for Colby reached and surpassed its participation goal with 51 percent alumni participation!
