Ask a Colby alum of any generation to reflect on why he or she loves the College and within a moment or two the conversation inevitably turns to the faculty. Inspiring, caring, committed professors--passionate about their intellectual disciplines and devoted to their students--have been the heart of Colby since Jeremiah Chaplin and his followers clambered off the boat and up the banks of the Kennebec. It takes a special sort of scholar to invest a career in Colby, somebody for whom good teaching is a calling. We don't have graduate teaching assistants and never have. All faculty--from the newest to the most senior--teach a full load of undergraduate courses, supervise student research, and become friends and mentors to Colby students. You'll find them in the dorms, in the dining halls, in the audience at student plays and concerts, and in the stands at athletic events. The faculty are, in short, the lifeblood of the place.
Finding and keeping such dedicated scholar-teachers is at the heart of Colby's mission, and endowed professorships are our most effective means of recruiting and retaining the best faculty of any liberal arts college in the country. When we began the decade of the 1990s, Colby had only four fully endowed chairs--just about at the bottom of the list for any group of selective liberal arts colleges. Now, thanks to the generosity and commitment of many members of the Colby family and several foundations, we can boast 32 endowed professorships--among the most of any peer institution. These chairs have already strengthened faculty leadership in departments across the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences and in interdisciplinary studies, rewarding many of our best teachers and allowing us to recruit nationally distinguished scholars to lead and revitalize existing programs or launch new curricular initiatives.
