Dear Colby Friends,
Linda and I have been at Colby for nearly 21 years now, and, as we begin to make our farewells, we find it tremendously heartening to see all the loyal friends who continue to support the College year after year. We are always encouraged and grateful when alumni tell us that their Colby experiences enriched their lives and broadened their horizons, inspiring them to give something back. What they share helps us to provide coming generations the opportunity for the same kind of rewarding experiences. Working together on The Campaign for Colby, alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff have helped prepare the College to sail into the next century as one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the country. Just as important, though, The Campaign has strengthened our many ties and relationships.
The Campaign for Colby set out to raise $100 million to ensure that Colby remains at the forefront of liberal arts education. I am delighted to report that the Campaign raised an astounding $150,598,315, exceeding our goal by nearly 50 percent. I thank all the members of the Colby family--alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff--who pitched in together to make this happen. Particularly, I would like to thank the Campaign leadership, Lawrence R. Pugh '56, Edson V. Mitchell '75, and Douglas M. Schair '67, for spearheading this ambitious undertaking and helping us reach and surpass our original goal in such a spectacular fashion.
In addition to increasing the numbers of endowed chairs from nine to thirty-three and adding [number to come] new scholarship funds, The Campaign has enabled us to construct new science facilities, residence halls, the Pugh Multicultural Center, and the Lunder House, to renovate existing science facilities, to expand the art museum and improve facilities for modern languages and arts education, and to extend information technology resources to all areas of the campus.
The Campaign has helped prepare the College to sail into the next century as one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the country. Just as important, though, it has strengthened our many ties and relationships. President-elect William (Bro) Adams will come on board a thriving enterprise, and you have all made that possible with your generosity, dedication, and hard work.
Although Linda and I will leave Waterville, we will not ever be far from this wonderful college. With fond memories, we wish you all well.
