Have You Heard? On June
24th, 2008, Junko Goda '01 shared her career exploits with us now that she's left her post as associate researcher at a pharmaceutical company to persue acting in Los Angeles. She works alot with the Asian American theater scene (East West Players, Lodestone Theater Company) and with the community. She's also had some background work in films. "You can see me standing next to Rosamund Pike in Fracture and if you look hard enough, you see me in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift", she writes. She's also done children's theater, a production of Trojan Women and a Cox Communications commercial, which aired mostly in the Southern US. Missed someone's news from the past? Click here for the "Have You Heard?" archives. What Can You Do with a Degree in Theater & Dance? Far too often, collegiate degrees are equated with a mythical key to jobs in a directly related field. Any degree is better thought of as a path to elevated thinking. Albert Einstein summed it up best when he said "The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks."* Many of our majors and minors go on to acting/directing, dance/choreography, and design/production careers or to similar graduate programs. All of our graduates apply the critical thinking that develops from a study of the arts towards their chosen careers (along with "the show must go on" dedication and discipline), no matter whether their chosen profession is closely allied to theater & dance or not. Here is a partial list of ways that former students are applying their theater & dance education in their post-Colby lives: acting, dancing, design, directing for television commercials, Director of Communications, graduate school, interactive media and advertising development, internship, literary management, nursing, photography, playwrighting, Producer, production management, Research Technician, stage management, teaching, technical production, touring children's theater, and writing. *Quote taken from Einstein: His Life and Times by Philipp Frank.
