Unit #2: The Glass Menagerie - Design Theory and Practice: Concept Development

(9) Thursday, March 3: Spatial Development--Form and Function. Discussion of The Glass Menagerie
Transition from Unit #1 to Unit #2. Unit #2 expands on design to include scenery. With a clearer understanding of dramatic and choreographic form, the class will concentrate on how research, design theory, and graphic presentation combine to express scenographic vision and directorial/choreographic possibility. Discussion of The Glass Menagerie.

(10) Tuesday, March 8: Concept--The Path to a Viable Design
Creative research is the foundation for successful design solutions, but what to build on it? This research needs to be explored in a dynamic way through conversation with Design Team members and through active sketching and modeling. This class will center on how to use creative research to define a concept. Image presentation: SL#3-Concept Development.

(11) Thursday, March 10: Spatial Expression--The Ground Plan and Scenic Sketch
Concentrate on the Ground Plan (and companion drawings) and the Scenic Sketch. Cover international conventions for graphic presentation and illustrate difference sketch styles: thumbnails, refined sketches, and renderings. Image presentation: SL#4-The Ground Plan and SL#5-The Scenic Sketch.

(14) Tuesday, March 29: Spatial Expression--The Concept Model
With the formulation of the design approach solidified the designer moves to a final commitment through the concept model. This scaled model expresses form, the ground plan, proportion, texture, and color.

(17) Thursday, April 7: The Glass Menagerie Gallery Presentation
Today is the culmination of work on Unit #2. Students will display their work in gallery format in Room 203. Presentation and discussion will center on appreciating individual scenographic solutions while considering future refinement through critical analysis.
