Board of Trustees Statement Following Autumn 2015 Meeting

At its autumn meeting the Colby College Board of Trustees discussed sexual assault and misconduct reported in recent surveys undertaken by Colby and other colleges as well as the reported behavior of Bill Cosby, recipient of an honorary degree in 1992. Although Colby College does not rescind honorary degrees, the board shares the deep concerns expressed by many about the conduct attributed to Mr. Cosby. The board believes that the most appropriate and meaningful way to address both this situation and the disturbing prevalence of sexual misconduct revealed in surveys is to ensure that Colby becomes a leader in sexual violence prevention, education, and support. We strongly support the administration as it works to build upon existing programs and create new, innovative ways to confront this problem on our campus and make a broader impact. The board is deeply committed to making all necessary resources available for this purpose and looks forward to reviewing the College’s planned improvements later this academic year.
