Colby General Layout Guidelines

Colby Footer
The footer at the bottom of the page is as important as the header. It lists all the pertinent information such as copyright, location, and contact info and identifies the page as a Colby page. It also acts as navigation for long pages and large sites. Every Colby page must have a standard footer. This helps users get contact information and acts as a footnote if the page is printed.

It is a good idea to make text links at the footer of navigation that you have on the page. This helps when there are long pages where primary navigation is scrolled past. It is also helpful to make text links of the main navigation. (See the bottom of this page for an example.) Use <p></p> tags to differentiate the different types of navigation. List the most detailed navigation first and work your way down to more general types of navigation (such as the general Colby College navigation).

Insert your department or club address and information in place of the comments. The text links listed are for general Colby links that may be of interest to any user. Keep these just above the copyright and address.

A Colby footer looks like this:

The major links from your page are repeated at the bottom for long pages and each page has "Colby College," the name of the department who owns the page, an address, and contact information including email.

About the "Last Modified" Line
The "last modified" date and time stamp is not mandatory for most pages, but is helpful to the user to see how current the pages is. If your page is time or date sensitive, such as a fees schedule, calendar, or materials that are updated on a cyclical basis, you should use this feature.

There is no need for you to note the date and time each time you update your page, the server can do this for you. Instructions are given below.

In general, pages that are open to on- and off-campus users should be reviewed at least once and month and updated as needed.

How to Code the Footer Into Your Page
Level of Difficulty: medium, understanding of HTML
This is seems like a lot of code, but to modify it for your needs is quite easy to do.

As the last element on your page, copy and paste this code into your file:

Where it says "Link Here," put the names of the major links of your site. You can copy and paste if you have more links. (The "&nbsp;" is a special HTML character that is the equivalent of one space. In this case we need two spaces.)

Put your department name and link in the correct area, your Mayflower number and zip, and the telephone and fax number you wish users to use. Enter in the correct email contact. You can also change the word "Contact" to the actual email address or something more specific.

Preview your file before uploading to see the changes you have made and to see the final results.
