Colby Hosts 1996 Collegiate Woodsmen's "Mud Meet"

Colby College in Waterville, Maine, will host the 1996 Mud Meet for college woodsmen's teams on Saturday, April 6. Individuals, pairs and teams from Colby and Unity Colleges, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire and the University of New Brunswick will compete in traditional loggers' events including ax-throwing, pole-climbing and buck-sawing.

Ten teams and about 60 individuals will convene at Colby's woodsmen's field at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The meet begins with individual events in the morning, including a woodsman's marathon and obstacle course. Events for individuals include the ax throw, vertical chop, chainsaw/disk-stack and pole climb, as well as the marathon. A doubles "crosscut-till-death" contest is planned, and teams will compete in a crosscut relay, a bow-saw relay and a six-person chop-and-split relay.

Events should last until about 5 p.m. and spectators are welcome.
