Jim Osman
Sculptor
The sculptor Jim Osman will deliver a slide talk about his work at 4:30p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Colby College in room 154 of the Bixler Art and Music Building.
Jim Osman is a recognized sculptor and active teacher and has shown extensively on the East Coast. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Queens College of the City of New York, where he worked with the sculptor Larry Fane. He currently teaches at the Parsons School of Design and has taught as a visiting artist at Dartmouth College and the Vermont Studio Center. His list of one-person shows includes exhibits at Dartmouth College, Denison University, and University of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
In the summer 2003 issue of Art News Barbara A. MacAdam reviewed a two-person exhibit at the Five Myles Gallery, Brooklyn, New York, in which she wrote of Osman’s work: “His works are somewhat reminiscent of M.C. Escher’s in their geometric illusionism and invoke Cubism with their intersecting angles. And all the while, their kindergarten colors, Lego-like building blocks, and quirky apertures suggest sculpture at play, in all senses. Perspectival high jinks and playhouse effects are the enticing rule”.
Among the awards and fellowships Osman has received are a MacDowell Colony residency, the Curator’s Choice Award in the “Mass Exposure” show, and an Artists Space exhibition grant.
Osman’s lecture, which is sponsored by the Colby College Art Department and the Arts Lecture Fund, is open to the public without charge.
