Painter Robert Birmelin will be at Colby College in Waterville on Tuesday, March 12, for a slide presentation and discussion of his artwork. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in room 1 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. It is sponsored by the Colby College Art Department and the Arts Lecture Fund and is open to the public without charge.

Birmelin is known for his paintings of contemporary urban life. His recent works focus on memory and states of mind and can be viewed from several visual perspectives. “My work is about a state of mind, about the internal contradictions we live with,” said Birmelin. “It is about how we often find ourselves simultaneously balancing two mutually exclusive, contradictory ideas or interpretations.”

Birmelin attended New York’s Cooper Union and London’s Slade School of Art in London, and received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Yale University School of Art. He has had more than 50 one-man shows and his work is represented in 37 public collections, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Hirshorn Museum.
