Sculpture studio and art history collaboration

In spring 2015, the students in Assistant Professor Bradley Borthwick’s Sculpture II course will engage with the lost wax technique, an ancient method of creating bronze sculpture. In February and March the students will pour liquid bronze at artist Jay Gibson’s foundry in Belfast, Maine. Professor Véronique Plesch and Assistant Professor Marta Ameri will also provide guest lectures on Renaissance bronze medals and ancient bronze sculpture, respectively. Professor Plesch will discuss six medals at the Colby College Museum of Art, outlining their iconography and cultural functions. Professor Ameri will introduce students to the history and function of metal seals in the ancient world.
